We partnered with Peace Corps Volunteer, Elizabeth Cairns for this El Yayal trip


Community of El Yayal

  • Approximately 30 km outside of Nagua
  • Population aproximately 300 people (roughly 100 homes)
  • Main source of income is agriculture and animal husbandry

 


Ventilated Improved Pit Latrines

  • Organized by the Women's group of El Yayal and the Peace Corps Volunteer.
  • 33% of the homes in the community did not have latrines.
  • Of the homes that had latrines only 27% are in good/fair condition
  • 16% of the houses had one or more family embers with a case of diarrhea

 


Community Clinic

  • We organized and operated a clinic for the community.
  • Physician and Nurse Practitioner saw approximately 300 adults and administered anti-parasitics to over 200 children.
  • Students were able to work in triage, shadow the physician or nurse practitioner, or distribute medication in the pharmacy.
